匈牙利14日午夜正式封鎖封鎖該國與塞爾維爾的邊界，16日下午3時許在塞爾維亞的霍爾格斯鎮，數百名亟欲闖關的絕望難民與3百名匈國鎮暴警察爆發激烈衝突，難民至少2人重傷，200至300人因吸入催淚瓦斯或外傷而接受治療。

這些難民大多來自敘利亞與伊拉克，他們以英語大喊「打開，打開」，隨後對警察投擲石塊與塑膠水瓶，而警察出動警棍，並以催淚彈及水炮還擊。臉上裹著圍巾的年輕男性難民衝上前，企圖突破警方防線，現場婦女與兒童在刺鼻煙霧中哭泣尖叫，以圍巾裹住臉。

有位血流滿面的男性難民逃離這場混戰，他懷裡的孩子嚇得嚎啕大哭。

來自伊拉克的哈山被催淚彈刺得雙眼通紅，頭髮與衣服也被水炮沖濕，他朝著匈牙利警察憤怒大喊：「匈牙利人，你們真可恥！我們逃離戰爭與暴力，卻沒想到在歐洲遭到這種不人道的野蠻對待。」

匈牙利警察在這場衝突裡拘留29人，據稱官員認出其中1名男子是知名的「恐怖分子」。匈國暴力對待難民的舉動引起全球撻伐，匈國當局堅稱這是自衛行動，表示許多難民危險又暴力。聯合國祕書長潘基文表達「震驚」，強調匈牙利警察的行為「讓人難以接受」。

另一方面，越來越多難民改道克羅埃西亞，再穿越斯洛維尼亞與奧地利，希望藉這條更漫長的路線前往心中理想的避難國德國。克羅埃西亞表示願意協助難民通過，而過去短短24小時內已湧入逾6千名難民，預計人數將持續增加。克國總理米拉諾維奇警告，若屆時克國無力負荷大批難民過境，可能改採不同作法。
